Traditional weaving needs patent registration<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Registration of patents for traditionally woven
\nproducts is needed to promote the development of small-scale
\nproducers because holding copyrights for their designs,
\nclassified as a public domain, is impossible, said an official.<\/p>\n
"Most of the country's provinces have their own traditionally
\nwoven products, which are used in particular for ritual and
\ntraditional ceremonies," the chairperson of the Small Industry
\nDevelopment Board, Atih Suryati Herman, told reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
Traditionally woven products, which usually have
\na length of only up to ten meters a piece, are handmade.<\/p>\n
Some designers who focus their works on improving designs of
\nold tribal weaving have aired their complaints over the absence
\nof copyrights for such products. Their products which are on sale
\nat department stores are illegally copied and mass produced.<\/p>\n
"That means that art works which have been created drudgingly
\nare duplicated illegally ignoring designers' rights," designer
\nNelwan Anwar told the reporters in a press meeting on a two-week
\npromotion of traditional weaving.<\/p>\n
He was concerned about Indonesians who do not appreciate
\ncreative designs of traditional weaving like Latin American
\npeople do. According to Nelwan, foreigners praise the clothing
\ndesign as an exclusive artwork.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Titi Cacuk Sudarijanto, chairperson of the Mentari
\nFoundation, said that the foundation, in cooperation with the
\nMinistry of Industry and the National Handicrafts Council, will
\nhold the promotion of traditional weaving, which will include an
\nexhibition and a seminar, at the Borobudur Inter-Continental
\nhotel and the Grand Duta department store in Jakarta. The seminar
\nwill be held at the hotel on July 27, while the exhibition will
\nbe held at the department store on July 27 through Sept. 10.<\/p>\n
Minister of Industry Tunky Ariwibowo and Minister of
\nCooperatives and Small Enterprises Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya are
\nslated to deliver speeches at the seminar on international market
\nopportunities for woven products.<\/p>\n
Former director general of electricity and energy Artono
\nArismunandar, former president of PT Telkom Cacuk Sudarijanto,
\nweaving collector Koos Arumdanie and designer Carmanita will also
\npresent their papers at the seminar.<\/p>\n
A gala show and contest of woven product designs will be held
