Traditional values often cause inefficiency: Cacuk<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Deeply rooted traditional values often cause
\ninefficiency in Indonesia's business practices, a noted
\nbusinessman said here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Bank Mega's president Cacuk Sudarijanto told members of the
\nIndonesian chapter of the International Advertising Association
\nthat some traditional philosophies, such as the Javanese,
\nencouraged passivity and conformity which hindered initiatives
\ntoward efficiency.<\/p>\n
\"Many people, for example, still live by the Javanese
\nexpression alon-alon asal kelakon' (slowly but surely),\" he said
\nat the association's monthly power breakfast meeting.<\/p>\n
Cacuk, a former president of the state-owned PT Telekomunikasi
\nIndonesia (Telkom), said these values were irrelevant now, as
\nthey were inherited from the colonial period.<\/p>\n
He said the process of cultural transformation had been slower
\nin Indonesia because of its long years under colonial rule.<\/p>\n
During the Dutch colonial period, it was necessary to adopt
\nthis kind of philosophy to maintain a low profile, he said.<\/p>\n
\"But we are now living in a competitive era where efficiency
\nis the rule of the game. We should adopt the universal values of
\nstriving for efficiency,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Certain customs and traits such as bureaucratic inertia, lack
\nof a sense of teamwork, poor time management, avoidance of
\nconflict and inadequate appreciation of quality standards, must
\nbe transformed into more professional values, he said.<\/p>\n
Professional values included skilled entrepreneurship, good
\nteamwork, constructive problem solving, standardized quality,
\nstrong loyalty, and efficient and hard working habits, he said.<\/p>\n
He said he was optimistic that Indonesia, by transforming its
\nculture -- by adopting more professional values -- could improve
\nits efficiency to compete internationally.<\/p>\n
The young generation was already showing signs of adopting
\nprofessional values, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The foreign-educated offspring of the country's businessmen,
\nfor example, have adopted Western rationality and professionalism
\nwithout abandoning their oriental mores,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's meeting discussed the challenge of globalization
\nand work ethics in the marketing and advertising professions.
