Traditional markets struggle to survive<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A total of 153 traditional markets in and around
\nthe city might be forced out of business due to the fierce
\ncompetition from mushrooming supermarkets and chain stores,
\naccording to a councilor.<\/p>\n
Chairman of Commission B for economic affairs, Djafar
\nBadjeber, said over the weekend that the administration should
\nimmediately solve the problem by allowing small traders to run
\ntheir businesses again.<\/p>\n
\"Many developers and owners have built supermarkets and stores
\ntoo close to traditional markets which is against the city's
\nregulation designed to protect the existence of local markets,\"
\nDjafar said.<\/p>\n
He said some of the supermarkets and stores which have
\nviolated the regulation include Cipulir Plaza, near Pasar
\nCipulir's traditional market in South Jakarta, Matahari
\ndepartment store near Pasar Klender, East Jakarta and Golden
\nTruly, near Pasar Cikini in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to a gubernatorial decree No. 241\/1985 issued by the
\ncity administration, a supermarket should be built 500 meters
\nfrom a well-developed traditional market, one kilometer from a
\ndeveloping traditional market and two kilometers from a newly
\ndeveloping traditional market.<\/p>\n

Weak action from the administration, particularly in providing
\npermits for the establishment of new stores, means traditional
\nmarkets could become history in the near future, said Djafar.
\nThousands of lower-class families are dependent on markets for
\ntheir livelihood.<\/p>\n
He urged the city administration to implement the 1985 decree
\nconsistently.<\/p>\n
\"The administration must be careful in giving permits to
\ndevelopers,\" said Djafar after a hearing with executives of the
\ncity's economic development office Friday.<\/p>\n
\"What is happening now is that many traditional market traders
\nhave been evicted to make way for stores.<\/p>\n
\"This kind of practice must be stopped,\" he said.<\/p>\n
A representative of the city's economic development office,
\nIndianto, said the City Development Supervisory Office had
\nallegedly given a building permit to companies even though the
\nfirms did not have a recommendation from Indianto's office.<\/p>\n
\"So the problem lies with the supervisory office,\" Indianto
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Djafar urged city administration officials to cooperate with
\neach other to continue protecting traditional markets.<\/p>\n
\"Don't just blame each other. Try to consolidate the work and
\nthe rules together,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Traditional markets must be maintained to supply jobs to many
\npeople and provide goods and services at more affordable prices,
\nDjafar said.<\/p>\n
\"I personally like to shop at traditional markets because its
\nsurroundings have a friendly ambience and I can also get a good
\nbargain there,\" the councilor admitted.<\/p>\n
Customers who had good relations with traders could also pay
\nfor the goods later, said Djafar.<\/p>\n
\"This kind of treatment can't possibly be met by stores or
