Traditional body care for modern women<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Traditional jamu herbs have been used for ages
\nby the Javanese as medicine and cosmetics. Javanese princesses,
\nfamous for their beauty, use jamu to make their skin smooth and
\nhealthy. The herbs are also rumored to be the secret of the
\nprincesses' graceful, slim and perfumed bodies.<\/p>\n
Today, urban Indonesian women are turning from the modern,
\nchemical cosmetics back to traditional cosmetics and body care.
\nJamu is now trendy and traditional body care in demand.<\/p>\n
Perceiving the trend, Puri Ayu Martha Tilaar, a beauty center
\nin South Jakarta, offers various traditional cosmetics and body
\ncare treatments devised from time-tested Javanese formulas.<\/p>\n
The response is encouraging, said Ariani Widjaja, Puri Ayu's
\nmarketing executive. Wives of senior officials, some expatriates,
\nexecutives and celebrities including Dewi Sukarno, the ex-wife of
\nIndonesia's first president Sukarno, are regulars, she said.<\/p>\n
In the past, water was boiled for the steam bath, but today
\nelectrical steamers have replaced the traditional method.
\nBlending the herbs for the lulur aromatic body scrub was done by
\nhand, now sterile machines do the grinding. The only thing that
\nhasn't change is the herbs.<\/p>\n
The massages that accompany each treatment have also been
\nanalyzed to prevent side effects.<\/p>\n
Packages<\/p>\n
Puri Ayu, which only caters to women, offers over twenty
\ntraditional body care packages, including the following:<\/p>\n
The lulur malih warni treatment is said to smooth and brighten
\nskin. The treatment starts with a massage with aromatic oils like
\nkenanga (Canangium odoratum) and of cendana (sandalwood). A body
\nsteam comes next followed by an aromatic body scrub. The
\ntreatment ends with a soak in aromatic spices. Jamu Pamor herbs
\nare provided to improve blood circulation and digestion as well
\nas give the skin a healthy glow.<\/p>\n
The tubuh darah putih (white bodied girl) is a body bleaching
\ntreatment. The therapy leaves the skin silky and firm and removes
\nunwanted spots. A vitamin E cream is first massaged into the skin
\nand is followed by an aromatic body steam, a body scrub,
\nbleaching, a bubble bath and finally a drink of Jamu Pamor.<\/p>\n
To stimulate and moisturize the body, a milk bath is
\ncomplimented with a massage, body steam and Jamu Pamor.<\/p>\n
Brides and women who want to revive their sex lives go for the
\nKen Dedes body treatment. Ken Dedes, was a wife of King Ken Arok
\nof Singosari kingdom in East Java in the 13th century. Like
\nCleopatra, she is known for her striking beauty. The treatment
\nsupposedly transforms a woman into a physically perfect being who
\nis good in bed.<\/p>\n
The Ken Dedes treatment includes a kenanga oil massage, an
\naromatic body steam, a bath with mangir herbal soap which
\nlightens the skin, a soak in aromatic and \"women's secret\"
\nspices. After another bath in flowery fragrances, it all ends
\nwith body and genital scenting with smoke from ingredients
\nincluding betel.<\/p>\n
'Ratus'<\/p>\n
\"Perfume often doesn't last long, but this kind of perfuming,
\nwe usually call ratus, last longer,\" insisted Puri Ayu's beauty
\ntherapy specialist Worro Harry S.<\/p>\n
Ratus is traditionally used to reduce sweat production and to
\ncure discharge.<\/p>\n
Those wanting firmer and bigger breasts can try Puri Ayu's
\nspecial package. It includes breast massage, compresses, masks,
\naromatic foams baths, breast exercises and Jamu Pembayun aimed at
\nbody shaping.<\/p>\n
A slimming package, called selangking singset, offers aromatic
\noil massage and body steam, a soak in aromatic herbs, a body wrap
\nor mask using the selangking herb for slimming and jamu
\nselangking singset. The jamu is said to slim the body, reduce
\nappetite, beautify the body shape and eliminate fat.<\/p>\n
\"Usually our clients lose around two kilograms after eight
\ntreatments,\" said Worro.<\/p>\n
Carrot, apple or avocado baths are aimed at smoothing and
\nbrightening the skin while making it healthier. The beauty center
\nclaims that the vitamin C, E and B5 contained in the fruit and
\nvegetables regenerate dead skin cells.<\/p>\n
They also vow the apple bath cures skin irritations.<\/p>\n
Other organic treatments include the biogenic protien and
\ncellulose enzyme rich aloe as well as seaweed, algae and rose
\nextract.<\/p>\n
All body treatments included massage to relax the client,
\nimprove blood circulation and make it easier for the herbs to
