        "content": "<p>Traders oppose Matahari's plan<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Local traders look likely to keep Matahari, a<br>\nlarge-scale retail store chain, from opening at outlet at Klender<br>\nmarket.<\/p>\n<p>Soedradjat Soeleman, president of the city-owned market<br>\nmanaging company PD Pasar Jaya, told reporters yesterday that<br>\nMatahari will not be allowed to buy spaces at Klender market if<br>\nits existence hurts the operation of traditional traders.<\/p>\n<p>\"In some cases the existence of a Matahari department store<br>\ncan attract more visitors to a market. But if its operation<br>\naffects local traders' business activities, it is better not to<br>\nallow it to enter the market,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Soedradjat made the remark in response to a demand advanced by<br>\n10 of the market's traders, who represented 600 of their<br>\nassociates. The ten traders went to City Council on Monday,<br>\nurging City Administration not to allow the Matahari department<br>\nstore to enter the market.<\/p>\n<p>Klender market is being rebuilt after it was gutted by fire<br>\nlast March and the project is expected to be completed in the<br>\nmiddle of next year.<\/p>\n<p>The fire in March was the second at Klender market, the first<br>\noccurred in December 1993. The fire forced market traders to<br>\nbuild provisional kiosks nearby, while waiting for construction<br>\nof the new market building by City Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Soedradjat said that the traders who used to operate there<br>\nwill be given first priority to occupy the new building, which is<br>\nin line with PD Pasar Jaya's efforts to protect the interest of<br>\nsmall-scale traders.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the City Administration promise, that former traders<br>\nwill be given first priority, the traders are now worried that<br>\nthey cannot afford the kiosks because of their high prices,<br>\nbetween Rp 1.9 million (US$863.63) and Rp 3.6 million each, with<br>\na down payment of 25 percent of the total price.<\/p>\n<p>\"Even if we can buy the kiosks, we will not be able to compete<br>\nwith the large-scale retail company, if Matahari is allowed to<br>\nenter,\" Bahar, a former market trader, said.
