Traders agree to rent increase<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Traders at government-supported markets (locally
\nknown as pasar inpres) have finally agreed to the city
\nadministration's decision to upgrade the markets' status to self-
\nsupported markets under certain conditions, an official revealed
\non Friday.<\/p>\n
"The traders finally understand the decision to upgrade the
\nmarkets' status after a meeting with several city officials,"
\ndirector of city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya Syahril
\nTanjung told reporters at City Hall after the meeting.<\/p>\n
"However, they did ask our guarantee to allow them to continue
\nrunning their businesses at the markets," he added, while saying
\nthe resistance in the beginning was purely due to lack of
\ncommunication.<\/p>\n
Also present at the meeting were Assistant to City Secretary
\non Development Affairs Ongky Sukasah, head of the City Legal
\nOffice Nelly Sukmo and head of the City Economic Office Dameria
\nSaragih.<\/p>\n
The traders feared they would be thrown out of the markets
\nfollowing the new status.<\/p>\n
In the meeting, the traders also demanded the company not
\nraise the rent immediately.<\/p>\n
"We can understand the traders financial difficulties to pay
\nthe sharp increase. We'll therefore impose it gradually," Thamrin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"The important thing is that they already agree with the
\nupgrade" he added.<\/p>\n
Under the new status, traders running their business at a 4.2
\nsquare meters kiosk will be required to a pay daily rent (for the
\nbusiness, littering, and security) of Rp 2,000 (about 25 US
\ncents), or about three times higher than the old rate of Rp 700.<\/p>\n
Thamrin also said the upgrade would eventually give larger
\nbenefits to the traders.<\/p>\n
"The traders can use the kiosk's licenses on self-supported
\nmarkets as collateral to apply for loans from banks, not
\npermitted to those of renting kiosks in government-supported
\nmarkets," he said.<\/p>\n
"Their children can also inherit the kiosks or sell them to
