Traders against market plan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A protest by hundreds of traders in Petojo Ilir
\nmarket, Central Jakarta, entered its second day Saturday as
\ntraders rejected a plan to move them to another market.<\/p>\n
A public order official, Adi, said six were held for
\nquestioning at the Gambir police subprecinct.<\/p>\n
\"Several traders damaged the market fences,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Traders started protesting Friday when they found the city
\nmarket firm, PD Pasar Jaya, had built fences around their market
\nspaces.<\/p>\n
Adi said traders brought banners and yelled at market
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
He said one of the banners read, \"We demand our rights. We are
\nentitled to stay here until 2004.\"<\/p>\n
The protest started at 9 a.m. and ended about 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
Adi said sidewalk vendors joined the protest.<\/p>\n
On Saturday the Pos Kota daily reported that traders
\ncomplained the fences hampered business.<\/p>\n
The city market firm planned to renovate the market and move
\nthe traders to a temporary market. The traders refused because
\nthey did not agree to the compensation offered. (ste)<\/p>",
