Trade surplus with China US$5.86b<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia posted a cumulative trade surplus of
\nUS$5.86 billion with China since 1985, when direct bilateral
\ntrade ties were restored, up to the end of last June, a Chinese
\ndiplomat said here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Tan Weiwen, the first secretary in charge of economic and
\ncommercial affairs at the Chinese Embassy, said that the total
\nvalue of bilateral trade reached $2.64 billion last year with
\nIndonesia registering a surplus of $537 million.<\/p>\n
\"The two-way trade totaled $1.53 billion in the first half of
\nthis year and is estimated to reach $4 billion for the whole
\nyear,\" he told reporters.<\/p>\n
Tan said that Indonesia is now China's third biggest trading
\npartner among the member countries of the Association of
\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) after Singapore and Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Besides Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, ASEAN also groups
\nBrunei, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
Indonesian exports to China consist mainly of plywood, copper,
\npaper, aluminum and fertilizer. Imports from China comprise
\nmainly of cotton fiber, textiles and machinery.<\/p>\n
Tan held the news conference yesterday to promote the Economic
\nand Trade Exhibition and Forum to be held in Beijing in the
\nmiddle of October to coincide with the 26th general assembly of
\nthe World Trade Center Association.<\/p>\n
He invited more Indonesian companies to make use of the
\nexhibition to promote their products.<\/p>\n
Erwin Ramedhan, managing director of the World Trade Center
\nhere, said that 16 Indonesian companies have so far registered to
\ntake part in the exhibition.(04)<\/p>",
