Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, stated in\nJakarta on Wednesday that the nuclear sector is one of the priorities in\nthe Indonesian Government\u2019s discussions within the framework of\nStrategic Trade Management (STM).<\/p>\n
STM is a global trade governance initiative designed to ensure that\nstrategic goods and technologies with potential dual-use\ncapabilities\u2014both commercial and military\u2014are not utilised to support\nactivities that could undermine national or international security.<\/p>\n
Budi noted that the implementation of STM is in line with Indonesia\u2019s\ncommitment under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the United\nStates.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic\nAffairs, discussions (on STM) have commenced in the nuclear sector, with\nBapeten, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency, leading the initial\ndiscussions regarding goods related to the use of nuclear energy,\u201d he\nsaid during the 5th Annual Southeast Asia Forum on Export Controls\n(SEAFEC).<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Trade has established three main priorities to\nsupport the implementation of this strategic trade framework.<\/p>\n
Budi explained that his ministry will establish clear boundaries of\nauthority between agencies, develop simple and transparent business\nprocesses to avoid burdening the business community, and integrate the\nnew framework with existing systems.<\/p>\n
He expressed optimism that STM can ensure the domestic flow of goods\nand technology is well-controlled, thereby strengthening Indonesia\u2019s\nposition as a safe and responsible trading partner. At a global level,\nthe system is believed to be able to increase the confidence of\ninternational partners and pave the way for businesses, including MSMEs,\nto compete in the global market.<\/p>\n
The government has ensured that the adoption of STM will be carried\nout with a rapid yet gradual approach to provide sufficient time and\nspace for businesses and relevant institutions to adapt.<\/p>\n
Budi stated that amidst the rapid development of dual-use\ntechnologies, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and the\nutilisation of critical minerals, Indonesia is required to balance\nmarket access with trade security.<\/p>\n
As a responsible member of the international community, Indonesia is\ncommitted to continuously strengthening multilateral cooperation to\nmaintain the principles of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and\nweapons of mass destruction.
