Trade Minister appoints 10 new top officials<\/p>\n

Minister of Trade Mari E. Pangestu has swept a new broom
\nthrough the top posts in her ministry in a bid to cut down on
\ncorruption and excessive red tape currently burdening exporters
\nand importers.<\/p>\n
Mari appointed 10 high-ranking officials to the five-month-old
\nministry on Tuesday and said she expected her new team to review
\nall policies in the trade sector to cut down red tape in the
\noverly bureaucratic and high-cost system.<\/p>\n
\"We are expected to improve our services to the public,
\nestablish a standard operating procedure and transparent tariffs
\nfor our services. We must eliminate illegal fees and cooperate
\nwith the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK),\" she said.<\/p>\n
The ministry dismissed eight senior officials from their posts
\nand installed 10 new officials to be director generals and
\nministerial advisors.<\/p>\n
The ceremony, however, left one post empty: the head of
\nNational Agency for Export Development (Nafed\/BPEN).<\/p>\n
Sources at the ministry said the post was initially reserved
\nfor marketing expert Rhenald Khasali from the University of
\nIndonesia but due to administrative problems he was not yet
\nemployed.<\/p>\n
Mari and Rhenald attended the ceremony and stood in the front
\nrow of guests.<\/p>\n
\"We are still looking for the right candidates. In the
\nmeantime, I will handle Nafed,\" Mari said, adding that she hoped
\nthe government would approve his appointment soon.<\/p>\n
She said the government would pay particular attention to
\nimproving the export performance of the Trade, Tourism and
\nInvestment plan, which was supposed to coordinate moves to
\npromote trade and tourism.<\/p>\n
She would release detailed job descriptions for her top-
\nranking officials shortly and do the same for second- and third-
\nechelon officials.<\/p>\n
The government split up the Ministry of Industry and Trade
\ninto two ministries in October but the separation was not made
\nofficial until almost three months later when a Presidential
\nRegulation was issued in January.<\/p>\n
The split was argued because global trade issues had become
\nmore complicated as were the problems faced by local industries.<\/p>\n
The industry and trade ministries were initially merged by
\nformer president Soeharto into a single ministry in 1995 -- in
\nanticipation of global trade liberalization following the
\nestablishment of the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n
