Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung claimed to have followed directives\nfrom the Ministry of Environment to cease open dumping operations at one\narea of TPST Bantargebang in West Java following a landslide at the\nfacility.<\/p>\n
Open dumping is a waste management method involving the dumping and\nstacking of waste on open land without sorting, processing, or soil\ncoverage.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn accordance with the Minister\u2019s directive in zone 4A, we will not\nconduct open dumping there,\u201d Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on\nTuesday, 10 March.<\/p>\n
Beyond this, Pramono stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government\ncontinued to coordinate with the Ministry of Environment to realise a\nwaste-to-energy project that is a priority for President Prabowo\nSubianto.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are now collaborating to be able to utilise locations and will\ncertainly free up new land. Bantargebang will be dedicated to a\nWaste-to-Energy Power Plant (PLTSa) that will operate there,\u201d Pramono\nexplained.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor this, approximately 8 to 10 hectares of land are required.\nMeanwhile, this land can be utilised to accommodate existing waste,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n
Previously, a collapse of a waste mound approximately 50 metres high\nin Zone IV of TPST Bantargebang on Sunday, 8 March, claimed four lives.\nThe incident is viewed as evidence of systemic failure in Jakarta\u2019s\nwaste management.<\/p>\n
Environment Minister and head of the Environmental Control Agency\n(KLH\/BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stressed that the tragedy served as a\nstern warning to the Jakarta Provincial Government to immediately cease\nopen dumping waste management methods, which are deemed hazardous to\npublic and worker safety.<\/p>\n
Hanif described the condition of TPST Bantargebang as the \u201ctip of the\niceberg\u201d regarding Jakarta\u2019s waste management problems.<\/p>\n
According to him, the facility has accommodated approximately 80\nmillion tonnes of waste over 37 years, placing it at a critical capacity\nthreshold.<\/p>\n
The use of open dumping methods at the site is deemed to violate\nprovisions in Law No.\u00a018 of 2008 on Waste Management. The existing\nsystem is considered incapable of adequately reducing safety risks for\nsurrounding communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis incident should not have occurred if management had been\nconducted according to regulations. TPST Bantargebang must serve as a\nlesson for all of us to reform immediately, for the sake of human life\nand environmental preservation,\u201d Hanif stated when visiting the\nlandslide site on Monday, 9 March.<\/p>\n
Environmental organisations assessed the Bantargebang waste mound\ncollapse in Bekasi, West Java, which killed at least four people, as\nevidence of a serious crisis in waste management governance.<\/p>\n
Governor Pramono Anung expressed surprise that workers at TPST\nBantargebang continued working during heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n
The March 2026 TPST Bantargebang landslide tragedy serves as a stern\nwarning. The dangers of open dumping methods and the government\u2019s strict\nregulations to eliminate the practice are significant concerns.<\/p>\n
