        "content": "<p>Tourists observe Javanese New Year<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: Some 7,000 local tourists from Sleman regency<br>\npacked Jl. Yogya-Godean in Guyangan village on Thursday evening<br>\nto watch a ceremony locally known as Suran Mbah Demang held by<br>\nlocal residents.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony, which began with the distribution of rice and<br>\nother dishes wrapped in banana leaves to visitors, reached its<br>\nclimax at midnight when the close relatives of Mbah Demang, a<br>\nformer revered village elder, began the face-washing ceremony<br>\nusing the water from the well of Tiban.<\/p>\n<p>Many local residents drank the water believing it brings good<br>\nluck and cures many ailments and paraded from Joglo Siswadiharjo<br>\nto the grave of the elder.<\/p>\n<p>Yulianto Dwiwasito, head of the local tourist office said that<br>\nthe ceremony was held in commemoration of Ki Demang Cokrodikromo,<br>\na villager known for his charity, austerity and altruism.--Antara<\/p>",
