        "content": "<p>Tourism development needs more private participation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications<br>\nJoop Ave encouraged private firms here yesterday to improve their<br>\ncontribution to the development of the country's tourism, post<br>\nand telecommunications sectors.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's the turn for private firms to sit in the driving seat,<br>\nwhile the government is the 'co-pilot',\" Joop said at the first<br>\nsession of a two-day workshop of his ministry.<\/p>\n<p>He said that both state-owned and private companies should<br>\ncarefully weigh the public interest when setting prices and<br>\ntariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\"The status of the state-owned postal service PT Pos Indonesia<br>\nhas just been changed into that of a profit oriented firm. Next<br>\nyear, the company will launch several new services. But I hope<br>\nthere won't be any price hikes,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day workshop was officially opened by President<br>\nSoeharto on Wednesday, together with a two-day tourism<br>\nconsolidation forum which ended on Thursday evening. The forum<br>\nwas aimed to create a consensus on the country's tourism<br>\ndevelopment plan.<\/p>\n<p>The events, especially the consolidation forum, focused on the<br>\ncountry's tourism sector which has been targeted to become the<br>\ncountry's major foreign exchange earner by 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The forum was divided into three commissions, macro economy,<br>\npolicy and pricing.<\/p>\n<p>A number of executives of private firms participating in the<br>\npricing commission acknowledged that the cost of domestic air<br>\ntransportation and hotels in Indonesia is still high.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's necessary to create a new formula for the pricing<br>\narrangement,\" an executive said.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations agreed on in the forum included a plan to<br>\nencourage both domestic and foreign tourists to visit places<br>\noutside Java and Bali and the restructuring of domestic air<br>\ntransportation networks.<\/p>\n<p>Joop said yesterday that he will report the recommendations to<br>\nPresident Soeharto.<\/p>\n<p>\"I'll report the results to the President in the next two or<br>\nthree months,\" he said, adding that other government institutions<br>\nare expected to take part in the promotion and development of the<br>\ntourism industry.(icn)<\/p>",
