Tornado wrecks havoc in Semarang<\/p>\n
Residents assess the damage after a tornado damaged 150
\nhouses in the district of Tembalang in Semarang, Central Java
\nlate on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Three people were injured and at least five of the houses in
\nthe Sendangguwo and Tandang neighborhoods were destroyed, while
\nmany others were seriously damaged as the tornado ripped off
\ntheir roofs.<\/p>\n
Tohirin aka Jayeng, 40, a resident whose house was leveled at
\nthe Sendang Asri housing complex, said the winds hit about 4 p.m.<\/p>\n
"I saw this black wind coming and becoming pointed into a
\nfunnel. It suddenly approached and hit my house," he said.<\/p>\n
Tohirin's wife, two children and mother-in law were in the
\nkitchen at the time when the tornado known locally as "Ulur-ulur"
\npassed over their home, destroying the guest and bedrooms.<\/p>\n
"It was as if the wind had lifted my home up," Tohirin said.<\/p>\n
The disaster also destroyed the walls of four neighboring
\nhouses.<\/p>\n
Many other homes in the area lost their roofs and residents
\nand neighbors had started rebuilding on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Tembalang district head Dayat said the tornado also damaged a
\nsmall mosque and felled power lines and about 50 trees. His
\noffice was still collecting data on the damage, he said.<\/p>\n
Villagers said the tornado was the worst to hit the district
\nin living memory.<\/p>\n
Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarip and his wife, Sinto Sukawi,
\nvisited the scene on Sunday, accompanied by senior officials.<\/p>\n
"We will provide the victims with assistance immediately," the
\nmayoral spokesman Achyani said -- Suherdjoko\/The Jakarta
\nPost\/Semarang<\/p>",
