Top post open to indigenous<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Indigenous people will be given more chances
\nto hold the top post in provincial police offices in the future,
\nNational Police chief Lt. Gen. Rusdiharjo said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Speaking after swearing in Brig. Gen. I Wayan Ardjana as Bali
\nPolice chief, Rusdiharjo said the policy to name a local for the
\npost was a response to growing demand for regional autonomy and a
\nmanner to improve relations between police and the people.<\/p>\n
\"Aspirations from the bottom, as heard in Aceh and Papua, is
\nall that we have to accommodate,\" Rusdiharjo said, referring to
\nturmoil in Aceh and Irian Jaya, where demands for independence
\nhave been on the rise.<\/p>\n
But Rusdiharjo said that the National Police would still
\nmaintain the strict qualifications for selections for the top
\njob.<\/p>\n
\"Brig. Gen. Wayan was selected not only because he is a Bali
\nnative, but he qualifies for the post. The local factor is just a
\nminor requirement in the selection,\" Rusdiharjo said.<\/p>\n
Ardjana, former secretary for the National Central Bureau of
\nInterpol in Indonesia, replaced Brig. Gen. Togar Sianipar, who
\nended his term after just three months. Togar has been appointed
