Gen. Rusdiharjo said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after swearing in Brig. Gen. I Wayan Ardjana as Bali<br>\nPolice chief, Rusdiharjo said the policy to name a local for the<br>\npost was a response to growing demand for regional autonomy and a<br>\nmanner to improve relations between police and the people.<\/p>\n<p>\"Aspirations from the bottom, as heard in Aceh and Papua, is<br>\nall that we have to accommodate,\" Rusdiharjo said, referring to<br>\nturmoil in Aceh and Irian Jaya, where demands for independence<br>\nhave been on the rise.<\/p>\n<p>But Rusdiharjo said that the National Police would still<br>\nmaintain the strict qualifications for selections for the top<br>\njob.<\/p>\n<p>\"Brig. Gen. Wayan was selected not only because he is a Bali<br>\nnative, but he qualifies for the post. The local factor is just a<br>\nminor requirement in the selection,\" Rusdiharjo said.<\/p>\n<p>Ardjana, former secretary for the National Central Bureau of<br>\nInterpol in Indonesia, replaced Brig.
