Top leaders to meet in Yogyakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Abdurrahman Wahid, Vice President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri, Yogyakarta's Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X
\nand People's Consultative Assembly Speaker Amien Rais are due to
\nhold a much anticipated "political reconciliation" meeting in
\nYogyakarta on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n
It has not yet been confirmed whether House of Representatives
\nSpeaker Akbar Tandjung will attend the meeting at the Keraton
\nYogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Sources said it was likely other "national figures" would be
\ninvited to the meeting, but it had not yet been decided who would
\nreceive these invitations.<\/p>\n
In Bandung, Amien Rais said on Friday night "the meeting will
\ndiscuss the latest situation on the political, social and
\nsecurity fronts ahead of the General Session (of the Assembly)".<\/p>\n
"The event should have been held this month but Mbak Mega
\ncould not make it due to her tight schedule, so we rescheduled it
\nfor Aug. 1," Amien told journalists.<\/p>\n
"I realize the four of us cannot claim to represent all 210
\nmillion people in the country ... therefore I hope other
\npolitical party leaders such as Hamzah Haz, veteran journalists,
\nthe Indonesian Military commander and students will share their
\nthoughts with us.<\/p>\n
"We hope the meeting can unify all related parties involved so
\nthat the General Session runs smoothly," Amien said.<\/p>\n
Amien said he fully supported the National Police chief's
\nefforts to secure the General Session and urged all parties not
\nto organize mass rallies to disrupt the meeting.<\/p>\n
Separately, sources close to the President told The Jakarta
\nPost on Saturday the improved political climate following
\nAbdurrahman's apology to the House had smoothed way for the Aug.
\n1 meeting.<\/p>\n
The President's written answer to the House's interpellation
\nmotion changed the political attitude of all members of the
\npolitical elite, especially those from the largest political
\nparties, the sources said. This has, as of now, made them more
\nthan willing to come to the meeting and begin a new national
\nreconciliation, they said.<\/p>\n
"The upcoming meeting will have the sole intention of calming
\nthe political situation ahead of the General Session," the
\nsources added.<\/p>\n
Participants of the meeting will discuss the future of the
\nnation and begin to set the vision for total reform in the
