Top Dutch diplomat gets RI honor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Former Dutch ambassador to Indonesia, Jan Herman
\nRobert Dudley van Roijen, received on Wednesday the Jasa Utama
\nStar from the Indonesian government in recognition of his
\nmeritorious services during his term in Jakarta from 1992 to
\n1994.<\/p>\n
The award was presented on behalf of President Soeharto by
\nIndonesia's ambassador to the Netherlands, Soedarmanto
\nKadarisman, at his office in The Hague, on Wednesday night,
\nAntara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Soedarmanto said at the ceremony that Van Roijen's
\nambassadorship helped put relations between Indonesia and the
\nNetherlands on a new, \"more natural\" footing, following a brief
\nrow in 1992.<\/p>\n
Relations between the two countries were shaken in that year
\nwhen Indonesia decided to reject further offers of Dutch
\nfinancial assistance, citing The Hague's continuous interference
\nin its domestic affairs as the main reason.<\/p>\n
Kadarisman said bilateral relations were restored quickly
\nafterwards, thanks to the hard work of various people to rebuild
\nthe ties based on mutual respect for each other's sovereignty and
\nmore mutually beneficial cooperation.<\/p>\n
\"Van Roijen is regarded by the Indonesian government as one of
\nthose individuals who played an important role in starting a new
\nera in Indonesia-Netherlands relations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added that the planned visit by Queen Beatrix to Indonesia
\nnext month is the culmination of the improving relations.<\/p>\n
Van Roijen served twice in the Dutch embassy in Jakarta. His
\nfirst was from 1965 to 1967 as third secretary.<\/p>\n
The ambassador is the son of Dr. Van Roijen, the Dutch chief
\nnegotiator in the roundtable talks with Indonesian republican
\nleaders in 1949 that ended a four-year bloody war between the two
\ncountries that was started when the Dutch tried to reimpose its
\ncolonial rule after the World War II.<\/p>\n
The award presentation ceremony was attended by a number of
\nDutch top officials, including Piet Bukman, a former cabinet
\nminister who now serves in the Dutch lower House. Dutch
\nparliamentary speaker Hd. Tjeenk Willink also attended the
