        "content": "<p>Top CEOs to speak at Bali summit<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>World-class CEOs from the region and other parts of the world<br>\nwill speak at the upcoming ASEAN business and investment summit<br>\non Bali, a top envoy said.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN BAC)<br>\nRudy J. Pesik told The Jakarta Post last week that the CEOs will<br>\njoin 11 heads of state from ASEAN member countries plus India,<br>\nChina, South Korea and Japan.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, said that the presence of Japanese Prime Minister<br>\nJunichiro Koizumi was not yet certain, pending the result of the<br>\ngeneral election in his country.<\/p>\n<p>Rudy said that the top business leaders to speak in the<br>\nbusiness and investment forum were CEOs of Toyota Corp., Daimler<br>\nChrysler, Proton, Singapore International Airlines, SingTel, Tata<br>\nEngineering, Ayala Corp., Keppel Group, Charoen Pokpand and PT<br>\nIndofood Sukses Makmur.<\/p>\n<p>\"We're still trying hard to get Bill Gates to also speak in<br>\nthe forum,\" he said, although acknowledging that the chance would<br>\nbe slim as Gates already had a busy schedule for the next year.<\/p>\n<p>About 1,000 businesspeople from members countries of the<br>\nAssociation of South East Asian Nations and its key trading<br>\npartners like Japan, China, India, and South Korea are expected<br>\nto participate in the summit, which will be held from Oct. 5 to<br>\nOct. 7.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held in conjunction with the ASEAN leaders<br>\nsummit.<\/p>\n<p>Rudy explained that one of the mandates of ASEAN BAC when it<br>\nwas set up two years ago was to hold a business summit.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the business and investment summit had two main<br>\ngoals: integration of ASEAN business and economy, and how to<br>\nboost the competitiveness of the ASEAN region.<\/p>\n<p>\"We'll focus on what needs to be done to make ASEAN as one<br>\nintegrated region,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rudy was optimistic that the event could be implemented<br>\nsuccessfully despite very limited time for preparation.  He was<br>\nappointed as ASEAN BAC chairman in April.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that in the beginning it was very difficult to get<br>\nsponsors for the event particularly as many companies had already<br>\nprovided sponsorship for the APEC event in Bangkok, which will<br>\nalso be held next month.<\/p>\n<p>\"I had to underwrite it by providing a personal guarantee of<br>\nUS$1 million ... to show people that I believe in this,\" he said,<br>\nadding that DHL became the first sponsor by providing $50,000.<\/p>\n<p>Rudy is the CEO of DHL's Indonesian operation.<\/p>",
