        "content": "<p>Tommy gets two months' remission<\/p>\n<p>Suherdjoko, The Jakarta Post, Semarang<\/p>\n<p>The government has presented an Idul Fitri gift to Hutomo \"Tommy\"<br>\nMandala Putra as he is among 637 inmates on Nusakambangan island<br>\nwho will have their jail terms reduced to mark the Islamic<br>\nholiday.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the Central Java office of the justice ministry,<br>\nMarsono, said the length of remission varied, with Tommy, who is<br>\nserving a 15-year prison term for murder, getting two months off<br>\nhis time in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Also having their jail terms reduced were six convicted<br>\ncorrupters who were moved to Nusakambangan last Friday, including<br>\nPande Lubis, a former deputy chairman of the now defunct<br>\nIndonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA),<\/p>\n<p>Marsono failed to specify why Tommy and the other inmates were<br>\nbeing granted remission, although normally the government reduces<br>\nthe jail terms of inmates for good behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Remission is traditionally granted to mark the country's<br>\nIndependence Day on Aug. 17 and major religious holidays such as<br>\nIdul Fitri and Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>It is given following an evaluation conducted by the prison<br>\nauthorities.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy, the youngest son of former authoritarian ruler<br>\nSoeharto, was sentenced to 15 years in jail in 2002 after being<br>\nfound guilty of the murder of Supreme Court justice Safiuddin<br>\nKartasasmita and illegal possession of arms.<\/p>\n<p>He ordered the murder of the justice while on the run after<br>\nbeing convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by a panel of<br>\njudges that included Safiuddin in a corruption case involving the<br>\nState Logistics Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy has been granted remission on five occasions since 2002,<br>\nwith the total cut to his jail term amounting so far to 17 months<br>\nand 25 days.<\/p>\n<p>He sparked controversy recently after receiving a visit from<br>\nactress Sandy Harun. The local office of the justice department<br>\nhas since banned the celebrity from visiting the prison again.<\/p>",
