Tommy fails to testify in trial<\/p>\n

Murder accused Hutomo \"Tommy\" Mandala Putra was not required
\nto testify at the trial of an alleged accomplice in the killing
\nbecause prosecutors failed to include him on a list of witnesses,
\nthe presiding judge said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Tommy failed to testify at the hearing of Dody Hardjito, who
\nis being tried for his alleged role in the murder of Supreme
\nCourt Justice M. Syafiuddin Kartasasmita last year.<\/p>\n
Chief prosecutor Ismanto told the South Jakarta District Court
\nhe could not present Tommy due to \"security reasons\".<\/p>\n
\"I can understand as it's not easy to present him. It will
\nneed tight security,\" said presiding judge Tusani Djafri, who
\nopened the hearing without the presence of the two other judges.<\/p>\n
Djafri told the prosecutor to summon Tommy again but added
\nthat there was no obligation for the prosecutor to do so as
\nTommy's name was not included on the list of 36 witnesses.<\/p>\n
\"If he can't come, just summon other witnesses,\" the judge
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Another witness, Hetty Siti Hartika, also failed to attend the
\ntrial because, according to the prosecutor, she was ill.<\/p>\n
Before the hearing, Ismanto told reporters that prosecutors
\nhad sent a summons to Tommy two weeks ago and asked the police to
\nsafeguard the hearing and the transfer of the defendant from
\nCipinang penitentiary in East Jakarta to the court. But the
\npolice did not respond to the request.<\/p>\n
Ismanto said that Tommy was not included on the list because
\nhe was on the run when the dossier was made.<\/p>\n
Tommy is being tried at the Central Jakarta District Court on
\ncharges of masterminding Syafiuddin's murder, illegal possession
\nof arms and ammunition, and fleeing from justice.<\/p>\n
According to the indictment, Tommy had ordered Dody to hire
\nmen to kill Syafiuddin, the judge who had recently sentenced
\nTommy to 18 months in jail for graft.<\/p>\n
\"Perhaps he did not feel well after attending his hearing on
\nWednesday,\" Ismanto said.<\/p>\n
