Tommy and Saenah<\/p>\n
A drama took place in the South Jakarta District Court last
\nWednesday. Saenah, a simple servant, gave testimony implicating
\nthe defendant Hutomo Mandala Putra, and in return received a
\ndisguised threat from the youngest son of former president
\nSoeharto.<\/p>\n
Saenah and another witness, Hetty Siti Hartika, allegedly were
\ncoached by Tommy's defense lawyers to portray a scenario that
\nwould exonerate Tommy from the charge of masterminding the murder
\nof judge Syafiuddin Kartasasmita.<\/p>\n
Under these circumstances, Saenah's testimony was truly
\nuplifting. Her frank, simple and unpretentious statements showed
\nthat honesty still exists in the Republic. Her courage to tell
\nthe truth despite the alleged pressure and material offers is
\npraiseworthy; an act which deserves to be described as heroism.<\/p>\n
Saenah, perhaps, does not feel that she is a heroine. She only
\nwishes to tell the truth, put this confusing situation behind her
\nand return to her normal life. Yet, what villains we are if we
\npretend not to understand that Saenah's life is now in danger. A
\n23-year-old woman has been threatened by Tommy Soeharto in front
\nof a panel of judges and hundreds of people attending the
\nhearing. Imagine, if a judge can be murdered in public what will
\nhappen to a simple woman like Saenah?<\/p>\n
Therefore, we are obliged to protect Saenah.<\/p>\n
