Tomb removal to continue<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): The Tangerang mayoralty will push ahead with
\nplans to remove 310 tombs from the Cepek and Tanah Gocap public
\ncemeteries, for the construction of a roadway, despite protests
\nfrom the relatives of people buried there.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty will bear the cost of removing the tombs before
\nthey are handed over to the relatives for completion, Agus
\nBurhanuddin of the mayoralty said Saturday.<\/p>\n
About 300 relatives of people buried in the two public
\ncemeteries rejected Thursday the Tangerang mayoralty's
\ncompensation offer of Rp 74,710 (US$28.19) for each grave
\nremoved.<\/p>\n
The relatives, mostly Indonesian citizens of Chinese descent,
\nsaid the mayoralty's offer was too low.<\/p>\n
Moreover, those who accepted the compensation offer were
\nrequired to relocate the graves themselves, according to
\nrelatives.<\/p>\n
\"In our tradition, a grave relocation needs a special
\nceremony,\" said one relative who asked for anonymity. \"The
\nceremony costs money.\"<\/p>\n
Burhanudin said the graves must be relocated because the
\npresent site was needed for the Cisadane riverside road from Jl.
\nKarawaci to Jl. Syaeh Yusuf.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty had provided a one-hectare plot of land in the
\nKedaung Baru subdistrict of Batuceper, Tangerang, for the
\nrelocation of graves, he said.<\/p>\n
The new site had been incorporated in Tangerang's spatial
\nplanning. \"The site will not be changed again in the future,\" he
