Tokyo Electric in Sibolga<\/p>\n
TOKYO (AFP): Tokyo Electric Power Co. Inc. will start
\ngenerating electricity in Southeast Asian countries in a shift
\nfrom its long-standing policy of limiting its activity to within
\nJapan, a major daily said.<\/p>\n
Japan's largest electric power supplier decided to start
\noverseas business because of sluggish demand at home, as well as
\ngrowing energy demands in other Asian countries, the Asahi
\nShimbun said Sunday.<\/p>\n
As its first overseas project, Tokyo Electric Power hopes to
\nparticipate in an Indonesian thermal power plant construction
\nwith an investment of \"several hundreds million yen (several
\nmillion dollars,\" the paper said, quoting company officials.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian government plans to build the power plant in
\nSibolga, northern Sumatra at a cost of about four billion yen
\n(US$38 million), installing two 100,000-kilowatt power
\ngenerators.<\/p>\n
Tokyo Electric Power plans to invest in a joint venture to be
\nset up by two Japanese trading houses -- Mitsubishi Corp. and
\nMitsui and Co. -- an Indonesia conglomerate and U.S. and European
\npower suppliers to take part in the construction and management
\nof the facility, the daily said.<\/p>",
