The Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) is urging the
Jakarta Provincial Government to conduct a total evaluation of safety
standards across all infrastructure projects. This move follows the
death of a toddler at a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project
site in the Manggarai area, South Jakarta. DPRD DKI Jakarta Deputy
Speaker Wibi Andrino assessed that the fatal incident serves as a loud
alarm that development cannot merely pursue physical completion but must
guarantee the safety protection of residents around the project site. “I
extend my deepest condolences for the death of a toddler in that
incident. This is a deeply saddening tragedy and should never have
happened,” Wibi said on Wednesday (1/7). According to him, there is no
excuse for project organisers to neglect safety aspects, regardless of
the funding source. Both projects using the regional budget (APBD) and
CSR funds must comply with strict security standards. Wibi requested
that the Jakarta Provincial Government immediately audit construction
project security systems on a regular basis. He stressed that every
physical work on site must be equipped with sturdy perimeter fencing,
warning signs, adequate lighting, and active supervision throughout the
construction process. “We ask the Jakarta Provincial Government to
evaluate the security aspects of all projects, including those carried
out through CSR programmes. Whatever the source of funding, the aspect
of public safety must not be ignored,” he said. He also confirmed that
the DPRD will seek explanations from all parties involved, from the
planning, implementation, to supervision stages of the project. This
step is considered important to reveal whether safety procedures were
carried out in accordance with regulations. If negligence or violations
of work safety standards are found, Wibi stressed that the responsible
parties must be held accountable. According to him, every public project
must have clear accountability when it causes casualties. “If negligence
or violations of safety standards are found, then there must be parties
who are responsible,” he asserted. Wibi believes the tragedy must become
a momentum for a total overhaul of development project governance in
Jakarta. Macro development success, he said, is not only measured by how
quickly a project is completed, but also by the extent to which
residents’ safety is truly protected. “Public safety must be the top
priority in every development in Jakarta,” he concluded.
",
