Chief of Staff in Territorial Matters Lt. Gen. Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono recently stated that a political deadlock might occur
\nin the presidential election. Therefore, it is necessary to
\ndevelop a mechanism or procedure to prevent a deadlock in the
\ncoming General Session of the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR).<\/p>\n
How? The general suggested to the press at the Supreme
\nAdvisory Council building in Jakarta on June 21, that what needs
\nto be developed is the way presidential candidates are nominated,
\nand to vote with the principle of \"one man one vote\".
\nAdditionally, he raised the issue of whether there is a level-one
\nand a level-two voting structure.<\/p>\n
Yudhoyono further said that in the community the most
\nimportant task requiring development was to build a consensus to
\ninvite the people to respect the mechanism of the presidential
\nelection. With regard to the best presidential candidate, the
\nIndonesian Military (TNI) appears to leave the matter to the MPR,
\nproviding the process is transparent, healthy and democratic,
\nbecause democracy is not discriminatory.<\/p>\n
TNI's stance on the presidential criteria seems wise. They
\nhave not been communicated to the public. The criteria involve
\nthe election of one of the country's best citizens through a
\ndemocratic process in which no differentiation between male and
\nfemale candidates is made. The presidential candidate must have
\nthe capacity and absolute integrity to lead Indonesia.<\/p>\n
I am relieved to learn of TNI's stance through its chief of
\nstaff in territorial matters, because there were rumors that if a
\npolitical deadlock did occur, TNI would take over the leadership.
\nThat would mean Indonesia would become a military state. Now, it
\nis clear TNI's stance is wise. May this country continue to be
\npeaceful and blessed.<\/p>\n
