TNI's right to cast votes<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police are soon to
\nleave politics and have their seats removed from the legislature.<\/p>\n
The question is how to channel the military's political
\nrights? And who will represent them in the House of
\nRepresentatives? This is what the government wants to answer
\nthrough the bill on general elections which gives the military
\nthe right to cast votes and be elected.<\/p>\n
The idea has apparently caused controversy. Army Chief of
\nStaff Gen. Ryamizard Ryacudu said that the right to cast votes
\nand be elected would be very dangerous for the professionalism of
\nthe military as it might divide them.<\/p>\n
Gen. Ryamizard has shown a forward-looking view based on the
\nstate's interest. This is an example which ought to be followed
\nby civilian leaders.<\/p>\n
The TNI and National Police's right to cast votes and be
\nelected in general elections will indeed lead to a very risky
\nexperiment for the country's integrity.<\/p>\n
