        "content": "<p>'TNI still welcomes Freeport aid'<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The Indonesian Military (TNI) would not ask U.S. gold<br>\nand copper mining giant PT Freeport Indonesia to provide<br>\nfinancial contributions to its soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's up to Freeport (whether to continue giving the<br>\nassistance or not); but we would welcome the good will from<br>\nFreeport,\" TNI Chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto told reporters<br>\nafter a ceremony in the Navy's marine squad on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the military would continue to protect Freeport<br>\ninterests with or without their financial assistance because \"it<br>\nis considered a vital asset\".<\/p>\n<p>Endriartono admitted that the military and Freeport had signed<br>\nan agreement over food and allowances for soldiers who guarded<br>\nFreeport's 2,800-square-kilometer site.<\/p>\n<p>Freeport confirmed that it had paid TNI and police security<br>\ncontributions totaling US$5.6 million last year. -- JP<\/p>",
