Joint Regional Defence Command III (Kogabwilhan III) has stated that\na member of the separatist group Free Papua Organisation (OPM) was shot\ndead during an operation in Kalo Fis village, Awingbon district,\nPegunungan Bintang regency, Highland Papua.<\/p>\n
Kogabwilhan III Commander Lieutenant General Lucky Avianto, in a\nstatement in Timika on Friday, said the OPM member was allegedly\ninvolved in the murder of three civilians in Yahukimo regency on Monday\n(20 July).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe OPM group suddenly opened fire on TNI personnel, so the task\nforce took firm action in accordance with the law, applicable\nregulations and the rules of engagement (ROE) to ensure that the actions\nwe took continued to uphold law and human rights,\u201d said Lucky.<\/p>\n
According to him, when about to be arrested, the OPM group member\nresisted by firing shots at TNI personnel, prompting the task force to\ntake firm action.<\/p>\n
Lucky added that other OPM members fled into the forest after one of\ntheir colleagues was killed in the operation.<\/p>\n
He stressed that the TNI would take firm action in situations that\nthreaten the safety of personnel and the public, while remaining guided\nby prevailing legal provisions.<\/p>\n
The Kogabwilhan III commander also called on OPM members to stop acts\nof violence and surrender their weapons.<\/p>\n
