TNI has contingency plan for Aceh<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: National Military (TNI) chief Gen. Endriartono
\nSutarto said on Tuesday that TNI had a contingency plan, should
\nIndonesia withdraw from the peace deal it signed with Aceh
\nrebels, whom he charged with continuously violating the truce.<\/p>\n
"If GAM (Free Aceh Movement) continues to violate the truce
\nand the violation reaches an intolerable level, TNI will propose
\nthat the government withdraw from the peace agreement," he told
\nlegislators at a hearing.<\/p>\n
Indonesia and the rebel group signed a landmark peace deal in
\nDecember last year after more than two decades of war in the
\nresource-rich province.<\/p>\n
The violence has declined in the two months since, but
\nsporadic killings continued on both sides.<\/p>\n
Endriartono heaped the blame on GAM for failing to honor the
\ncease-fire agreement. He added that TNI had intensified sea and
\nland patrols to prevent GAM from taking advantage of the truce
\nagreement by consolidating its forces.<\/p>\n
His statement comes as both sides are preparing for the second
\nstage of the peace deal. In this stage, GAM must store its
\nweapons at designated warehouses, while TNI must switch from its
\ncurrent offensive stance into a defensive force. -- JP<\/p>",
