The handling of forest and land fires (karhutla) in Riau has now\nreceived an unconventional strategic boost. The Indonesian National\nArmed Forces (TNI) is preparing freefall paratroopers to be deployed\ndirectly to fire locations that are difficult for ground troops or\nvehicles to reach.<\/p>\n
The readiness of these troops was reported by Riau Regional Military\nCommander Major General Agus Hadi Waluyo to President Prabowo Subianto\nduring a coordination meeting on forest and land fire management at the\nRiau Province Forward Command Post on Monday (24\/8).<\/p>\n
\u201cMr President, we report that we have also formed a PRCPB (Rapid\nReaction Disaster Management Force) team initiated by the TNI Commander.\nWe have prepared the best paratroopers to carry out freefall operations\nin certain areas so they can be directly on the spot to extinguish\nfires,\u201d said Agus.<\/p>\n
The team has been prepared as part of the Rapid Reaction Disaster\nManagement Force (PRCPB). The TNI stated that it has prepared an Alpha\nteam, including freefall paratroopers assembled from central command to\nsupport operations in Riau.<\/p>\n
The concept of troop deployment is tailored to terrain conditions.\nPrabowo requested that troops with special capabilities be used\nprimarily for locations that are difficult to reach through ordinary\nroutes.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, for places that are hard to reach. If it can be reached,\nperhaps a helicopter with rappelling or fast-roping would suffice. Are\nparamotors available?\u201d Prabowo asked.<\/p>\n
Agus replied that paramotors and drones are also available to support\noperations. With these various methods, personnel can gain access to\nhard-to-reach locations while monitoring fire conditions from the\nair.<\/p>\n
Prabowo then requested that the freefall capability should not merely\nbe a ceremonial capability, but should genuinely be used to assist in\ndisaster management.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf possible, please put it into practice and I ask that it be\ndocumented. I think this is the first time we have done this in history.\nIndeed, freefall should not only be for ceremonies but is now being used\nto help the people,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
In addition to special forces, the TNI has also prepared safety\nequipment for personnel working near hotspots and fire points.
