The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) has launched a simultaneous simulation exercise for handling megathrust disasters across North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Bengkulu provinces to enhance regional preparedness along the western coast of Sumatra. Led by Pangkogabwilhan I Lieutenant General Kunto Arief Wibowo, the drill focuses on synchronising standard operating procedures (SOPs), coordination among agencies, and equipping local authorities to respond independently and minimise casualties. This ongoing initiative underscores Indonesia's commitment to mitigating risks in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire region.

Bengkulu - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is conducting a
simulation of disaster response in three provinces as a measure of
preparedness against the threat of a megathrust disaster along the
western coast of Sumatra Island. “Our activities are taking place in
three provinces: North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Bengkulu, conducted
simultaneously. This is an activity in preparation, and we are trying to
synchronise to complete it. Each SOP is becoming more comprehensive in
the face of this disaster condition, so that regions can be independent
in handling disasters,” said the Commander of the Joint Regional Defence
Command (Pangkogabwilhan) I, Lieutenant General TNI Kunto Arief Wibowo,
in Bengkulu on Friday. Through this simulation, all elements in the
region can align and have consistent procedures in disaster response
steps if a megathrust disaster truly occurs. “From the planning
compilation, the protocols, then the SOPs, the steps, up to the
equipment and tools, the elements that can support the disaster system
to run well in the region,” he said. The key point of this effort is to
minimise the risk of casualties and other losses in the region through
structured handling involving cross-agency and elements. “Disasters will
certainly have casualties, but reducing them requires concern,
preparation must be made, starting from regulations, systems,
coordination, equipment, personnel, up to the boundaries of authority,
so that it can be handled quickly,” he said. In Bengkulu, the TNI
together with related elements is conducting a simulation of victim
rescue on the coast of Bengkulu City, handling steps, medical response,
and evacuation. This effort will be carried out continuously as a step
in disaster preparedness in the province located in the Pacific Ring of
Fire area.
",
