TNI announces major reshuffle to 'promote regeneration'<\/p>\n

The Indonesian Military (TNI) is scheduled to carry out
\nimmediately a major reshuffle of 120 strategic positions,
\nincluding three deputies to the chiefs of staff of the Army, Navy
\nand Air Force.<\/p>\n
Declining to go into detail, TNI Commander Gen. Endriartono
\nSutarto confirmed on Tuesday that he had approved the proposed
\nreshuffle on Monday, which, he said, was aimed at rejuvenating
\nthe Military.<\/p>\n
\"The reshuffle has nothing to do with the political or
\nsecurity situation. There's nothing special about it,\"
\nEndriartono said during a break in a hearing with House of
\nRepresentatives Commission I on political, security and foreign
\naffairs here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Current chief of the military education and training command
\nMaj. Gen. Darsono was appointed deputy chief of the Army to
\nreplace Lt. Gen. Soemarsono. Current chief of the Navy's Eastern
\nFleet Rear Admiral I.W.R. Argawa was appointed deputy chief of
\nthe Navy to replace Vice Adm. Syahroni Kasnadi. Current assistant
\nto the Air Force chief for operational affairs Rear Marshall
\nWardoyo was appointed deputy chief of the Air Force to replace
\nVice Marshall Ali Munsiri Rappe.<\/p>\n
The outgoing deputies to the three chiefs of staff have
\nreached their mandatory retirement age of 55.<\/p>\n
In addition, reshuffles were also announced for five strategic
\npositions in the Army and two others in the Navy.<\/p>\n
The Army leadership has decided to replace five officials in
\nfive military commands. Brig. Gen. Nurdin Zaenal was appointed
\nchief of the Trikora Military Command overseeing security in
\nPapua, to replace Maj. Gen. Mahidin Simbolon. Mahidin will be
\nassigned as official without portfolio at the Army Headquarters
\nin Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Djoko Santoso, current chief of the Pattimura
\nMilitary Command overseeing Maluku and North Maluku, was
\nappointed chief of Jakarta Military Command to replace Maj. Gen.
\nAli Yahya, appointed inspector general at Army Headquarters. Maj.
\nGen. Agus Tadi, current chief of the Army's Strategic Reserve
\nCommand's Division II, will replace Djoko in Ambon, capital of
\nMaluku.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Amirul Isnaeni was appointed chief of the Diponegoro
\nMilitary Command overseeing Central Java, to replace Maj. Gen.
\nCornelius Simbolon. Amirul was chief of the Wirabuana Military
\nCommand overseeing security in Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
Brig. Gen. Suprapto, current chief of staff at the Diponegoro
\nMilitary Command, was appointed chief of Wirabuana Military
\ncommand, to replace Amirul.<\/p>\n
Asked about possible political motives behind the reshuffle,
\nArmy spokesman Brig. Gen. Ratyono insisted that the reshuffle was
\nroutine, being related to tours of duty, and was aimed at
\nrejuvenating the Army organization.<\/p>\n
The murder of proindependence Papua figure Dortheys \"Theys\"
\nHiyo Eluway on Nov. 11, 2001, and the bloody attack on the mine
\nat Timika on Aug. 31, 2002, have been seen as two serious blows
\nto the Army as the Military was allegedly involved in both cases.<\/p>\n
So far, personnel from the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus)
\nare facing charges at a military court martial for their alleged
\ninvolvement in the Theys case. A team from the Federal Bureau of
\nInvestigation (FBI), accompanied by the Military and police in
\nPapua, is carrying out an inquiry into the Timika incident. Two
\nAmerican citizens and an Indonesian were killed in the incident.<\/p>\n
Reliable sources at the TNI Headquarters said that Rear
\nAdmiral Slamet Subiyanto, an assistant for TNI general affairs,
\nwas appointed chief of the Navy's Eastern Fleet to replace
\nArgawa. Rear Admiral Mualimin Santoso was appointed chief of the
\nNavy's Western Fleet to replace Rear Adm. Djoko Sumaryono.<\/p>",
