TNI and practical politics<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono recently asked Indonesian
\nMilitary (TNI) chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto to reinstate the
\nTerritorial Command, a move that has created a wide-ranging
\ndebate. This matter should not have become an issue because the
\nterritorial command has never been officially shut down; it has
\ncontinued to exist in the country.<\/p>\n
As said by General Sutarto, Koter's role and function, which
\ninitially concerned national defense and security, has been
\nextended to aid the police by providing as much information as
\npossible on issues pertaining to terrorist activities.<\/p>\n
This is not contradictory to Law No. 34\/2004 on defense and
\nnational security. The system stipulates that the TNI and police
\nwork together dealing with defense and security affairs with help
\nfrom the community.<\/p>\n
All components of the nation, including the TNI and police are
\nto be held responsible for security and defense affairs.<\/p>\n
This is fine as long as the TNI is not involved in practical
\npolitics as it was in the past.<\/p>\n
