The flow of information regarding the increasingly intense global
geopolitical situation has recently become a new stressor for society.
This impact is more significant for vulnerable groups, from children,
the elderly, disaster survivors, to individuals with a history of
certain mental conditions.

In response to this phenomenon, Imran Pambudi, Director of Health
Services for Vulnerable Groups, emphasised the importance of maintaining
mental health amid the onslaught of provocative news. According to him,
mental health has urgency equal to physical health.

“Not all information needs to be consumed. Protect yourself by
filtering news, maintaining mental health, and staying connected with
supportive people,” Imran said when contacted on Monday (6/4).

Imran shared several practical steps that can be taken to keep
vulnerable groups protected from the negative impacts of geopolitical
news. One key point is limiting the duration of information exposure.
The public is urged to set specific times for reading news and not to
continuously stare at gadget screens.

In addition, selecting information sources is crucial. “Choose
trusted sources and avoid information from unclear or provocative
channels. Also use simple language when explaining situations to
children and the elderly. Convey reassuring narratives, not frightening
ones,” he added.

Here is a summary of guidelines for maintaining mental health for
vulnerable groups:

Society is also asked to be more sensitive to body and mind signals.
Signs of stress that often appear after consuming news include
difficulty sleeping, increased anxiety, and deep feelings of
pressure.

If self-relaxation techniques and community support are not enough to
alleviate anxiety, Imran suggests immediately seeking professional help.
Especially if the symptoms felt start to lead to more severe disorders
like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

By diverting attention to productive activities and staying connected
with a positive social environment, it is hoped that vulnerable groups
can mitigate the adverse effects of global geopolitical uncertainty.
",
