Timorese resent flag burning<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: Local figures expressed their anger
\nyesterday at recent flag burning incidents involving supporters
\nof independence for East Timor in Australia.<\/p>\n
"As an Indonesian citizen, I cannot accept it," said Antonio
\nFreitas Parada, chief of the provincial legislative council.
\n"Anyone can demonstrate their disagreement to something, but not
\nby burning a country's flag."<\/p>\n
He said that people cannot burn a national flag in the name of
\ndemocracy because it will hurt the pride of the nation.<\/p>\n
A similar view was aired by Mariano Lopez da Cruz, an ardent
\nsupporter of East Timor's integration into Indonesia.<\/p>\n
He criticized the Australian government for not stopping anti-
\nIndonesia demonstrators from burning the red-and-white flag,
