        "content": "<p>President of Timor-Leste, Jos\u00e9 Ramos-Horta, has stated that his\ncountry\u2019s new status as a full member of ASEAN has brought benefits in a\nshort period, including the acceleration of infrastructure development\nand investment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe infrastructure development we require, such as hotels and\nconvention centres, has increased. There are also road widening projects\nand urban renewal initiatives,\u201d said Ramos-Horta, responding to\nquestions regarding the impact of ASEAN membership on Timor-Leste, on\nTuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after serving as a speaker at the \u201cLeadership Lecture\u201d\norganised by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia\n(ERIA) in Jakarta, he noted that this growth is further driven by\nTimor-Leste\u2019s readiness to assume the ASEAN rotating chairmanship in\n2029. However, he emphasised that this accelerated development is not\nsolely intended to prepare Timor-Leste to host future ASEAN Summits, but\nalso to improve public facilities for its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Ramos-Horta added that joining ASEAN has also boosted national\neconomic progress and investment, which has been able to enhance the\nquality of life for the population in a short timeframe. He expressed\noptimism that as Timor-Leste prepares for its chairmanship, more\ninvestors will commit capital to the country. \u201cTimor-Leste is being\n\u2018driven\u2019 to accelerate development across various sectors,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Ramos-Horta acknowledged that Timor-Leste still needs to\nundertake adjustments and adaptations to its national legislation to\nensure alignment with ASEAN treaties and principles. This process is\ntargeted for completion before 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the focus areas for Timor-Leste as an ASEAN member, the\nPresident stated that his administration aims to promote conflict\nprevention efforts at both the regional and member-state levels.
