Time has yet come for Tutut: Scholar<\/p>\n
SURABAYA (JP): Golkar's deputy chairwoman, Siti Hardiyanti
\nRukmana, has to withstand political ordeals before she is mature
\nenough to be considered for the vice presidency, Moslem scholar
\nAmien Rais said Saturday.<\/p>\n
Hardiyanti is President Soeharto's eldest daughter.<\/p>\n
\"She's too young now and, politically, she's not seasoned
\nenough. She needs at least another 10 years before she's up to be
\nconsidered for the vice presidency,\" Amien said during a break in
\na seminar on Indonesia's future held by the Muhammadiyah Moslem
\norganization's youth wing. At least 500 Moslem students joined
\nthe discussion.<\/p>\n
\"She does not have enough statesmanship,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Amien, a politics lecturer at Yogyakarta's Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity and chairman of the 28-million-strong Muhammadiyah
\norganization, was commenting on speculation that the 48-year-old
\nHardiyanti could be nominated for vice president.<\/p>\n
Amien said the next vice president should serve as \"a spare
\ntire ready to be used as the main tire at a moment's notice.\"<\/p>\n
\"The person in question should be able to take over the
\npresidential duties and responsibilities. The challenges and
\nstate problems in the future will grow even more complex,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said it was Hardiyanti's \"first term as a Golkar leader.
\nEvery body knows of her business experience, but she still has
\nfar to go in terms of political experience.\"<\/p>\n
Golkar recently said it might nominate Hardiyanti for vice
\npresident next year. Golkar said this after political scientist
\nJ. Kristiadi said Hardiyanti was a hot prospect to become the
\nnext vice president because of \"the proximity of her thoughts
\nwith those of President Soeharto\".<\/p>\n
Discussion on vice presidential candidates has been growing.
\nWhile it's a foregone conclusion that President Soeharto will be
\nre-elected next year, speculation on who he will favor as his
\ndeputy is growing.<\/p>\n
Names that have been mentioned include the incumbent Try
\nSutrisno, the state minister of research and technology, B.J.
\nHabibie, the state minister of national development planning,
\nGinandjar Kartasasmita, the minister of information, Harmoko, and
\nthe Army's chief of staff, R. Hartono.<\/p>\n
Amien said the growing discourse on the next vice president
\nwas a positive development in Indonesian politics.<\/p>\n
\"This nation has enough wisdom to understand the reality,
\nincluding on who will be the next president and vice president,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He called on younger people to start thinking and preparing
\nfor the post-Soeharto era.<\/p>\n
\"Mentally, intellectually, the young have to prepare for the
\npost-Soeharto era, think long-term. As for the current problems,
\nlet nature take care of them. Everything has its limit,\" he
