        "content": "<p>Timber company to breed deer in Southeast Sulawesi<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A giant timber company often accused of being<br>\npartly responsible for the loss of much of Indonesia's forests is<br>\nplanning to breed deer (cervus timorensis) in Buton, Southeast<br>\nSulawesi, where it runs an industrial forest estate.<\/p>\n<p>Local forestry officials have endorsed the project, which will<br>\ninvolve 30 female deer and five male deer to be raised by PT<br>\nBarito Pasifik Timber Group on a six-hectare breeding ground in<br>\nRumbia subdistrict.<\/p>\n<p>The company's human resource development chief, Bambang<br>\nPramonio, told Antara on Monday the company had begun work on the<br>\nproject, including clearing land and building fences.<\/p>\n<p>The 35 deer will be brought in from Rawa Aopa Watumohai<br>\nNational Park.<\/p>\n<p>According to an agreement, the government will retain the<br>\nownership of the original 35 deer and the company will own their<br>\nthird-generation offspring.<\/p>\n<p>Southeast Sulawesi Agency for Forest Protection and Natural<br>\nResource Conservation chairman Gunung W. Sinaga said the deer<br>\nbreeding project would be overseen by officials from the Rawa<br>\nAopa Watumohai National Park. The company will cover all<br>\noperational costs.<\/p>\n<p>The area earmarked for the deer is located near the national<br>\npark and is considered highly suitable for the project. The<br>\nbreeding ground is expected to become a new eco-tourist<br>\nattraction in the area.<\/p>\n<p>PT Bossowa Grup is also reportedly interested in breeding deer<br>\nin Mataosu, Kolaka regency.(pan)<\/p>",
