Tight control urged on imported food<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Consumers Agency (YLKI) called on
\nthe government yesterday to closely supervise imported foods to
\nensure Indonesia does not become a dump for expired food
\nproducts.<\/p>\n
Agency chairperson Tini Hadad warned that some western food
\nproducers have targeted developing countries for dumping expired
\nproducts.<\/p>\n
An American company producing Nabisco biscuits was known to
\nhave lengthened by six months the expiry dates on products
\nexported to South Korea and Indonesia, said Tini.<\/p>\n
Expiry dates on the outer packaging were between three and six
\nmonths longer than dates on the inner wrapping, she said.<\/p>\n
\"This means that biscuits consumed on a particular date should
\nhave been tossed in the waste basket three or six months ago,\"
\nTini said in a statement in connection with the World Food Summit
\nthat opened in Rome yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"This is an example of an export-import business that puts
\nconsumers lives on the line,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The South Korean government has lodged a protest and launched
\na boycott of Nabisco biscuits. In Indonesia, YLKI has
\nunsuccessfully tried to take the matter to the biscuit
\ndistributor, Rodamas.<\/p>\n
The Nabisco affair is only one of countless problems related
\nto imported food, said Tini.<\/p>\n
The agency urged the government to be wary of unfair business
\npractices, especially those related to food and agricultural
\nproducts.<\/p>\n
The agency also urged the government to ban imports of
\nagricultural products containing dangerous chemical residues used
\nas preservatives.<\/p>\n
\"The government should form an information network with other
\ncountries about food products which must be banned because they
\ncontain dangerous substances,\" Tini said. (pan)<\/p>",
