Tiger kills illegal logger in Riau<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: A Sumatran tiger killed an illegal logger in
\na protected forest in Siak regency, Riau province, a survivor of
\nthe attack said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Willy, the 21-year-old survivor, said his friend Yudi, 19, was
\nmauled to death by the tiger.<\/p>\n
The incident took place on Thursday when Willy, Yudi and
\nanother unidentified illegal logger, who was injured in the
\nattack, were cutting down trees in the Zamrud forest
\nconservation.<\/p>\n
"When we were working, a tiger suddenly appeared and attacked
\nthe three of us," Willy said, adding that he was working a little
\nways off from the other two.<\/p>\n
Willy said he heard the unidentified logger cry out for help
\nwhen the tiger attack. Willy found him after he had been wounded
\nand carried him out of the forest.<\/p>\n
"When I came back to the forest along with several local
\nvillagers, the tiger had disappeared but we found Yudi dead,"
\nWilly said.<\/p>\n
Head of the Riau natural resources conservation unit (KSDA)
\nJohn Kenedie could not yet confirm the tiger attack, but admitted
\nhe had heard of it from news reports.<\/p>\n
"Our field officers do not have any information about the
\nattack," he said.<\/p>\n
Kenedie said his office had sent a team to verify the report.<\/p>\n
If the alleged attack did take place, he said, the victim was
\nat fault because the forest serves as a protected habitat for
\nrare or wild animals.<\/p>\n
