How happy I was on hearing the Indonesian Consumers'
\nFoundation (YLKI) statement opposing the Jakarta City Water
\nCompany's (PAM Jaya) plan to increase water rates. It means that
\nthis institute is capable of conveying the wishes of the
\ncommunity who subscribe to the water company.<\/p>\n
The community is now overburdened with levies in various
\nforms. The drop of the rupiah in the international market is not
\nconnected at all with the little people, but they bear most of
\nthe burden.<\/p>\n
The price of the nine essential commodities has sharply
\nincreased. Tariffs of various services will also rise.<\/p>\n
PT Telkom has announced the application of long-distance rates
\nwithin the Greater Jakarta area. Now, suddenly, PAM Jaya wishes
\nto increase its rates too. Who else will follow? The PLN (state-
\nowned electric company), probably. Then the toll road. This will
\ninfluence bus fares. Then fuel prices, perhaps.<\/p>\n
What a heavy burden the people have to bear, the people who
\nhave to make do despite living below the poverty line.<\/p>\n
There are strong reasons for YLKI to give a prompt reaction to
\nPAM Jaya's planned increase. Along with probably hundreds of
\nthousands of city water consumers, I feel grateful for the
\nprotest.<\/p>\n
I hope that YLKI will unremittingly fight for the consumers'
\ninterest until PAM Jaya decides to cancel its plan.<\/p>\n
It would perhaps be better for the water company to take these
\nsteps, following YLKI chairwoman Tini Hadad's statement, rather
\nthan increase its rates.<\/p>\n
With such a bad service, not to mention the quality of its
\nwater, how dare PAM Jaya increase its rates! The company should
\nnot only think of profits, it should also respond to its
\ncustomers' complaints.<\/p>\n
