'Thuggery against media must end'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A group of journalists and non-governmental
\norganizations (NGO) urged all Indonesian media workers on
\nThursday to unite and strengthen ties to deter thuggery.<\/p>\n
The appeal came amid a recent campaign against thuggery, which
\nwas intensified after two Tempo journalists and one SCTV
\ncameraman became victims of violence in the course of their work
\nrecently.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the forum, senior journalist Fikri Jufri urged all
\nmembers of the media to take the initiative and begin aiding one
\nanother and protecting journalists and activists via frequent
\ncalls for an end to the increasing number of bullying, and
\nsometimes violent attacks.<\/p>\n
"We should conduct frequent visits to all media groups and the
\neditor's clubs to carry out educational campaigns on how to
\nprotect journalists and activists from violence," he said.--JP<\/p>\n

JAKARTA: The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) admitted on
\nThursday that registering voters in urban areas was more
\nchallenging than in rural areas.<\/p>\n
Toto E. Sastrasuanda, deputy head of the voter registration
\nprocess told reporters here that people who lived in apartments
\nwere rarely available for registration.<\/p>\n
"Most of them are unavailable during the week because they
\nwork many hours, and on the weekends, they go out of town on
\nvacation," he said.<\/p>\n
The General Elections Commission (KPU) contracted the BPS to
\nconduct the nationwide census and the voter registration process
\nin a bid to attain an integrated database on population for the
\naggregation on legislative numbers in each district for the
\nupcoming general election.<\/p>\n
Thus far, the BPS claimed that the voter registration process
\nhad reached about 65 percent of the process. The registration
\nstarted on April 1 and is expected to finish on April 30.--JP<\/p>\n

JAKARTA: The ad hoc human rights court decided Thursday on a
\ndelay, until May 6, the indictment of former Udayana Military
\ncommander Maj. Gen. Adam Damiri as the defendant failed to turn
\nup due to state duties.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor S. Hozie told the court that Adam was assigned by
\nthe Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto to
\nAceh from April 22 to April 30 to evaluate the ongoing peace
\nprocess ahead of the Joint Council meeting scheduled for Friday
\nin Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n
A defense lawyer of the defendant, AB Setiawan, said however
\nhis client left for the restive province earlier on Thursday.<\/p>\n
This is the second time the court postponed the hearing, which
\nwas expected to hear prosecutors' demand of sentence for Adam,
\nwho is accused of human rights abuses in East Timor following a
\nUN-sponsored ballot in August 1999. The violation carries a
\nminimum jail sentence of 10 years under the Law No. 26\/2000.<\/p>\n
Despite admitting that he was ready to read a 100-page
\nindictment, prosecutor S. Hozie said that his team had not

SURABAYA: Unlike the Air Force which has gone to many former
\ncommunist countries for its weaponry, the Indonesian Navy vowed
\non Thursday to rely on itself in modernizing its weaponry.<\/p>\n
"We opt not to take sides with either the West or East in
\nprocuring our arms because we are committed to standing on our
\nown feet," Rear Adm. Yussuf Solichien, the Navy Education
\ncommander, said in an apparent reference to the Cold War terms
\nfor NATO allies and Soviet-bloc allies, on the sidelines of the
\ninstitution's 57th anniversary celebration here.<\/p>\n
He was commenting on the Air Force, which acquired four
\nRussian-made jet fighters to end its long-standing dependence on
\nU.S. military aircraft.<\/p>\n
Yussuf said the Navy had built cooperation with state ship
\nmaker PT PAL in producing warships, including corvettes, starting
\nfrom 2005. Indonesia has purchased most of its warships from
\nBritain and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n
The Navy has planned to add 22 warships to its fleet within
