Used cooking oil produced daily by households actually holds the\npotential to become part of the energy of the future. This message was\ndelivered by PT Pertamina (Persero) during the IdeaFest 2026 event by\nintroducing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a sustainable aviation fuel\nthat uses Used Cooking Oil (UCO) as one of its raw materials.<\/p>\n
Through the Pertamina booth at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC)\nSenayan, Jakarta, visitors were invited to take a closer look at the\njourney of used cooking oil, from collection to its utilisation as a raw\nmaterial for SAF. This innovation simultaneously demonstrates how public\nparticipation in simple activities can become part of the development of\na low-carbon energy ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Pertamina\u2019s Corporate Secretary, Arya Dwi Paramita, stated that the\ndevelopment of SAF is one of Pertamina\u2019s concrete steps in implementing\nthe energy transition while strengthening national energy\nindependence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis oil is produced for aircraft fuel. However, do not worry, it is\nsafe because the research was initiated in 2015, strictly researched,\nand tested from 2021 to 2025,\u201d said Arya, as quoted on Saturday\n(5\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
The UCO-based SAF has also been used on flights by Pelita Air\nService, a subsidiary of Pertamina, for the Jakarta-Bali route. This\ndevelopment serves as evidence that low-carbon energy innovation can\noriginate from resources close to everyday life.<\/p>\n
Ibrahim Akbar, from the SAF Project Commercial at PT Pertamina Patra\nNiaga, said that the concept of utilising used cooking oil was one of\nthe most interesting topics attracting visitors at IdeaFest.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, I had the opportunity to present Pertamina\u2019s programme that\ntransforms used cooking oil into renewable fuel. I observed great\nenthusiasm. Of all those who asked questions, they were all about UCO,\u201d\nsaid Ibrahim.<\/p>\n
According to Ibrahim, the character of IdeaFest visitors, which is\ndominated by the younger generation, provides space for Pertamina to\nintroduce the energy transition in a more relatable and relevant manner.\nNot only by understanding the innovation, but the public can also take\npart through the collection of used cooking oil as raw material.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe hope is that more layers of society become aware of this\nprogramme so that the source of raw materials, in this case, used\ncooking oil, can be collected in as large a quantity as possible,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ibrahim added that the development of the SAF ecosystem requires\ncollaboration from various parties. In addition to the technological\naspects, the challenges to be addressed include price disparities, the\nmechanism for collecting used cooking oil, and regulatory support.\nTherefore, community involvement is a vital part of building a stronger\nUCO supply chain.<\/p>\n
