Three wounded in Irian protest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An intelligence officer and two students were
\ninjured when a proindependence demonstration on Cendrawasih
\nUniversity campus in the Irian Jaya capital of Jayapura turned
\nviolent yesterday, a media report said.<\/p>\n
The Antara news agency said law student Steven Suripatty was
\nshot in the head and was in critical condition in the hospital. A
\nsecond student, Korina Onim, was treated for a bullet wound.<\/p>\n
The reports said the intelligence officer was badly wounded
\nafter being mobbed by students who were angered by the use of
\nforce to disperse demonstrators.<\/p>\n
The protest, in which students staged a free-speech forum,
\nturned violent when protesters beat up a person they believed was
\nan undercover officer.<\/p>\n
Antara quoted Jayapura military chief Col. Josef Samuel as
\nsaying he regretted the shooting and apologized to a crowd of 200
\nstudents from the university.<\/p>\n
Josef said the authorities would investigate the students'
\nclaim that the military used violence to break up the protest.<\/p>\n
The incident followed two days of simmering unrest in Jayapura
\nand other parts of the vast province where a low-level Free Papua
\n(OPM) separatist insurgency has been underway since 1969.<\/p>\n
The agency said four vehicles and a bank branch were badly
\ndamaged by stone-throwing demonstrators in Jayapura on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Demonstrators demanding independence also smashed windows at a
\nlocal government building in Sorong, 1,080 kilometers northwest
