Three surrender to police in abortion case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Three more people wanted for their alleged
\ninvolvement in abortion practices and the dumping of fetuses and
\nbabies have surrendered to police.<\/p>\n
Ten people were apprehended last week and yesterday's arrests
\nbring the number of suspects to 13.<\/p>\n
The three have been identified as Herlina, a nurse who owns a
\nclinic in the Johar Baru district of North Jakarta, her assistant
\nBale, and another man identified as Daniel.<\/p>\n
They turned themselves in at different times Sunday, a senior
\npolice officer said yesterday.<\/p>\n
City police said they found about 10 bones, believed to be
\nfrom aborted fetuses, buried in a corner of the front yard of
\nHerlina's clinic.<\/p>\n
The unearthing of bones at the clinic was the fourth incidence
\nof dumping in the city.<\/p>\n
Last month remains were found at Warakas' garbage dump in
\nNorth Jakarta and, more recently, in the backyard of a school for
\ndisabled children in Central Jakarta and another site at
\nHerlina's clinic.<\/p>\n
According to the officer, who refused to be named, the three
\nhave been detained at a police subprecinct in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
All but one of the remaining 10 suspects are also being held
\nat the same subprecinct, the officer said.<\/p>\n
\"The other suspect, identified as Jaya, a doctor and also a
\nlieutenant colonel, surrendered on Nov. 29 to Military Police
\nHeadquarters.\"<\/p>\n
Police had been pursuing the 13 people following the discovery
\nof 11 babies and fetuses wrapped in three plastics bags at a
\ngarbage dump on Jl. Warakas in Tanjung Priok on Nov. 21.<\/p>\n
According to the source, 50-year-old Jaya was working as a
\ndoctor at two clinics -- Herlina and Amalia -- both on Jl. Tanah
\nTinggi IV. The clinics are suspected of having performed
\nabortions.<\/p>\n
He also worked at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Central
\nJakarta, the officer said.<\/p>\n
Another doctor, Budiman, also 50, was arrested last week for
\nhis involvement in the illegal practices at the same two clinics.<\/p>\n
The other eight suspects are identified as Kurniasih, 41, the
\nowner of Amalia Clinic, Tarinah, 52, Udin, 40, Sumarjo, 55, Sri
\nSumiyati, 34, Tad Mauruh, 57, Mariani, 27, and Suprih, alias
\nKampret, 40.<\/p>\n
Most of them live in Tanah Tinggi or a nearby area.<\/p>\n
The source said that Kampret, Sumarjo, Udin and Sri were
\nallegedly responsible for dumping the fetuses and babies.<\/p>\n
\"Udin and Sri, for example, were involved in the dumping of 11
\nbodies at Warakas. They might regret that they decided to just
\nthrow the bodies there without considering the possibility of
\nother people later finding the bodies,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"They must not have considered the dumping a serious matter
\nbecause they just left the babies at the garbage site.\"<\/p>\n
He said Sumarjo and Daniel, who worked as a gardener and a
\nschool employee respectively, had allowed Udin and Kampret to use
\nthe school as an alternative dumping site for the aborted
\nfetuses.<\/p>\n
The suspects dumped the bodies at night after the two clinics
\nhad closed, he said.<\/p>\n
The officer said police are still looking for more suspects
\nand evidence to help close the case.<\/p>\n
\"We are still searching for another six people, whose
\nidentities and roles are already known.\"<\/p>\n
He identified them as Pra, Tbr, Nin, Gin, Yul and Est.<\/p>\n
\"The first four are a nurse, an amateur anesthetist and
\ncleaners respectively at Amalia clinic. The other two are a nurse
\nand employee at Herlina's.\"<\/p>\n
He said the discovery of more babies in other areas were
\nmainly due to confessions by those in custody.<\/p>\n
On Thursday and Saturday, police found at least 10 babies'
\nbones and the skeleton of an infant buried in eight different
\nholes in the backyard of a school for disabled children on Jl.
\nArief Rachman Hakim 5B in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The arrested doctors and owners of the clinics will be charged
\nunder Article 348 and 349 of the Criminal Code for conducting or
\nhelping with abortions.<\/p>\n
The articles carry a maximum penalty of five years and six
\nmonths and possible revocation of the suspects' medical licenses.<\/p>\n
While Tarinah, Kampret, Udin, Sri, Tad and Bale will be
\ncharged under Articles 46 and 348, which apply similar penalties,
\nfor being accomplices.<\/p>\n
Sumarjo and Daniel will be charged under Articles 221 and 181
\nfor their involvement in the dumping of aborted fetuses. They
\nwill face a maximum penalty of nine months in jail or a Rp 300
