Three students die, 15 injured after falling from train<\/p>\n

Three students were killed and 15 others injured after they fell
\nfrom an express train in Cicendo, Bandung, West Java province, on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
The victims, all students from a senior high school in
\nTangerang, Banten province, were hanging out of the doors of the
\nSerayu express when they fell.<\/p>\n
The dead students were identified as Adhari, 19, Iwan, 19 and
\nYoga Budiman, 18. They were from Cicayur village in Pagedangan
\nsubdistrict, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Three of the injured victims -- Khaerudin, 18, Iwan, 18 and
\nAsiri, 19 -- were described as being in a serious condition and
\nare being treated at the Hasan Sadikin hospital. The 12 other
\nstudents suffered slight injuries.<\/p>\n
\"The dead and seriously injured students sustained wounds to
\ntheir heads and other parts of their bodies after they fell out
\nof the train,\" Bandung Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Edi Mulyono
\nwas quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
He said the accident occurred at 1:15 a.m. as millions of
\ntravelers were returning to Jakarta, Bandung and other big cities
\nand towns across Indonesia after celebrating Idul Fitri.<\/p>\n
Police and survivors said the 18 students fell from the train,
\nwhich was traveling from Kroya in Central Java to Jakarta via
\nBandung, after the bags belonging to three of them got caught on
\nbarbed wire near Bandung railway station.<\/p>\n
The students had boarded the train at the Bandung station
\nwithout tickets.<\/p>\n
Adhari and Iwan were killed instantly at the scene, while
\ntheir friend, Yoga, died on the way to the hospital.<\/p>\n
\"It's actually the fault of the students as they did not buy
\ntickets. They forced their way on to the train even though it was
\npacked,\" said Akhmad Sujadi, a spokesman for PT Kereta Api
\nIndonesia's Operations Region II, which covers the Bandung area.<\/p>\n
The bodies of the three students were taken home on Monday
\nafternoon aboard ambulances from the Hasan Sadikin hospital.<\/p>\n
The 18 students were returning home from a three-day climbing
\ntrip to Mount Papandayang in Garut regency, West Java. They
\narrived in Bandung on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Java's north coast railroad returned to normal on
\nMonday after being hit by three train accidents over three
\nconsecutive days up to Sunday.<\/p>\n
The last accident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday when
\na Kertajaya economy-class train derailed at Cabawan, Margadana
\nsubdistrict, some five kilometers from Tegal railway station in
\nCentral Java.<\/p>\n
There were no reports of casualties but the derailment cut the
\nline linking Jakarta and East Java for seven hours. The train,
\nmade up of 12 cars, was carrying around 1,000 passengers.<\/p>\n
However, by around 4 a.m. on Monday traffic on the accident-
\nprone line was back to normal.<\/p>\n
The Kertajaya, which was traveling from Jakarta to Surabaya,
\nEast Java, jumped the tracks apparently because its brakes
\nfailed, railway officials said.<\/p>\n
Earlier on Friday, another economy-class train, the Gaya Baru
\nMalam, derailed at around 4:45 a.m. on Cisanggarung bridge, which
\nlinks Central Java and West Java.<\/p>\n
The accident, which took place at Bantarsari village in
\nCileduk subdistrict, Cirebon regency, cut the Surakarta-
\nYogyakarta-Purwokerto-Jakarta line for more than six hours.<\/p>\n
In the third accident, two tank cars from a tanker train
\ncarrying diesel overturned some 200 meters east of Tegal railway
\nstation on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n
This brought traffic on Java's north coast line to a halt for
\nmore than five hours from around 5:17 p.m.<\/p>\n
The train left Maos railway station in Cilacap regency,
\nCentral Java, at around 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
No casualties were reported in the Tegal accident.<\/p>\n
Suhartono, a spokesman for PT Kereta Api Indonesia's
\nOperations Region III in Cirebon, blamed the three railway
\naccidents on the age of the rolling stock.<\/p>\n
The rolling stock of two of the three trains was produced more
\nthan 20 years ago, he said, while that of the Gaya Baru Malam
\ntrain was almost 40 years old.<\/p>",
