Three STPDN students get five months in jail<\/p>\n

The Sumedang District Court handed down on Monday a verdict on
\nthree Institute of Public Administration (STPDN) students, who
\nwere charged with assaulting a younger student named Jurinata in
\n2001.<\/p>\n
Lorent Oktoberi Tahan, 23, San Grito, 23, and Hendrik, 23, all
\nfrom Central Kalimantan province, were sentenced to five months
\nin prison.<\/p>\n
The students were the second group of STPDN students to be
\nsentenced after 10 STPDN students received suspended jail terms
\nlast year for assaulting younger students.<\/p>\n
During Monday's hearing, presiding judge Parlis Nababan said
\nthe three students, who were in year three in May 2001 when the
\nassault occurred, were guilty of assaulting Jurinata, who was a
\nyear two student at the time.<\/p>\n
The sentence was three months less than that demanded by the
\nprosecution.<\/p>\n
The three students will spend only seven more days in Sumedang
\nPenitentiary because they have been detained in the penitentiary
\nsince Sept. 23 last year.<\/p>\n
Judge Parlis said the assault happened on May 12, 2001 after
\nJurinata saw the three drinking alcohol when passing by their
\nroom.<\/p>\n
They saw Jurinata and quickly summoned him. After asking
\nJurinata a few questions, they started to beat and kick him,
\nleaving him badly injured.<\/p>\n
Jurinata was hospitalized for months due to a head injury and
\nbroken ribs.<\/p>\n
Jurinata reported the assault late last year, after the death
\nof fellow STPDN student Wahyu Hidayat.<\/p>\n
Jurinata was absent when the presiding judge read out the
\nverdict. However, his lawyer Sonita Wasita accepted the verdict,
\nsaying that the three were also victims of the harsh STPDN
\neducation system.<\/p>\n
Ten STPDN students were handed suspended sentences in October
\nlast year for assaulting junior students during initiation for
\nthe marching band.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred in June last year, but it did not make
\nthe headlines until October, when SCTV television station
\nbroadcast video footage of the violence.<\/p>\n
The Sumedang District court is trying another group of STPDN
\nstudents charged with causing the death of Wahyu Hidayat, a year
\ntwo student.<\/p>\n
Wahyu died in September last year after being beaten by 20
\nseniors at the institute, which has a reputation for imposing
\nmilitary-style discipline on its students.<\/p>\n
Wahyu was assaulted after failing to attend a ceremony to
\ncommemorate Independence Day last year in Bandung and a meeting
\nbetween STPDN students and West Java Governor Danny Setiawan.<\/p>\n
Wahyu's death drew national attention because he was not the
\nfirst victim of student brutality at the institute. Three years
\nago, student Erie Rakhman died after being beaten by seniors.
\nSeven students were charged in the death of Erie and were sent to
\nprison by the Sumedang District Court.<\/p>",
