Three soldiers questioned over rapes<\/p>\n

Three soldiers are currently being interrogated by Military
\nPolice in Lhokseumawe on suspicion of raping four women in Aceh
\nbetween June 20 and 22.<\/p>\n
Military operation spokesman Lt. Col. Ahmad Yani Basuki said
\nin Lhokseumawe on Sunday that the three, identified only as
\nPrivate SP, Private HD, and Private HL, had committed the crimes
\nseparately on different days in North Aceh. The victims were
\nidentified as SB, 25; HS, 25; AS, 21; and NL, 19.<\/p>\n
The three were arrested on Friday afternoon, and during
\nquestioning later that evening, the three soldiers admitted the
\ncrimes.<\/p>\n
\"The questioning of the three suspects and the witnesses has
\nled us to the conclusion that the three did indeed committed the
\ncrimes,\" Antara quoted Yani as saying.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the military killed eight alleged members of the
\nseparatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and captured four others in a
\nseries of gunfights with the rebels from Saturday through to dawn
\non Sunday.<\/p>\n
At least six alleged GAM members were killed during a gunfight
\nin Sukamulyo village, Kerta Makmur district, while one was killed
\nin Alue Dua, Nisam district, and another one was found dead in
\nKarang Baru district.<\/p>\n
A gunfight erupted in North Aceh on Sunday at 6 a.m. when
\ntroops led by Second Lt. Alfin Junjung attacked GAM rebels in
\nDewantara district.<\/p>\n
Separately, troops led by First Lt. Tunjung attacked rebels in
\nAlue Dua village, Nisam district. One rebel was killed and the
\nsoldiers seized 75 rounds of SP ammunition, 78 rounds of AK-47
\nammunition, green berets and chemical substances.<\/p>\n
In Pidie regency, a unit headed by Second Lt. Eka Purnama
\nambushed three alleged separatist rebels in Monasa Pauh village
\non Saturday. One rebel, Mahadi, 21, was captured. He was carrying
\na battery, photographs and medicines.<\/p>\n
In South Aceh, troops under Capt. Sunardiono arrested three
\nalleged rebels -- Musriadi, 30, Muntasir, 33, and Lasjuadi, 33.<\/p>\n
An unidentified body was found in the village of Alur Bambang,
\nAceh Tamiang. The dead man had been shot in the back.<\/p>\n
In Central Aceh regency, a farmer, Ngatimin, 60, was found
\ndead with a gash to his neck.<\/p>\n
In addition, some 19 GAM rebels in Alue Lelang village,
\nBendahara district, surrendered to the security forces.<\/p>\n
According to the martial law administration in Aceh, at least
\n294 rebels have been killed since the government started its so-
\ncalled integrated operation on May 19. Aside from those killed,
\n233 others have been captured, and 248 have surrendered.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile on Saturday, a Japanese photographer, whom police
\nsaid had illegally entered the troubled province on a tourist
\nvisa, left Aceh while American journalist William Nesson remained
\nin police detention.<\/p>\n
After two nights in custody, immigration officers drove
\nphotographer Takagi Tadatomo, 25, from North Aceh to Medan in
\nneighboring North Sumatra province, said Misrie of the North Aceh
\nimmigration office.<\/p>\n
The Japanese national was arrested Thursday night while taking
\npictures of refugees fleeing clashes between GAM fighters and
\ngovernment forces, the military said.<\/p>\n
Takagi's detention came a day after American freelance
\nreporter William Nessen was held for police questioning over
\npossible visa misuse. Nessen continued to be questioned Saturday.<\/p>\n
Asked about the difference between the two cases, Aceh police
\nspokesman Sayed Huseiny said Takagi was not a journalist and his
\npictures were for his private collection.<\/p>\n
And unlike Nessen, Takagi had not spend weeks with the Free
\nAceh Movement (GAM) rebels, Huseiny said.<\/p>",
