Three soldiers get posthumous promotion<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Greater Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen.
\nSutiyoso promoted posthumously yesterday three soldiers by one
\ngrade who died on duty during the election campaigns in the city
\nfrom April 27 to May 23.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said the three promoted soldiers were Sgt. Maj.
\nMargiono, First Pvt. Mansur and Second Pvt. Supriyanto.<\/p>\n
"The three soldiers had dedicated their lives to safeguarding
\nthe campaigns, and were beneficial in their duties. We are very
\nproud of them," Sutiyoso said in a military ceremony at the
\nMilitary Command Headquarters in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Military Command Spokesman Lt. Col. DJ. Nachrowi said the
\nthree officers had died after being treated for serious injuries
\nat Ridwan Meureksa Military Command Hospital in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Nachrowi said Margiono, who worked as an intelligence officer
\nwith the military command, was injured in a riot in Bekasi.<\/p>\n
Mansur, who was an officer of a cavalry battalion in the
\nmilitary command, was injured in another riot in Tangerang, while
\nSupriyanto, who was a military police officer, was injured in a
\nriot in Matraman, East Jakarta, Nachrowi said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said riots that erupted during the campaign period
\nshould be remembered and should awaken people who have not yet
\nrealized Indonesian democratic life, which is based on Pancasila.<\/p>\n
"Our investigations show that the riots were provoked by a
\nhandful of people, who claimed to act in the name of democracy,"
\nhe said, "but actually they destroyed public facilities with the
\nultimate intention of disrupting the 1997 general election."<\/p>\n
The Armed Forces, especially Jakarta Military Command, will
\nnot tolerate threats against people's freedom, he said. "We will
\nfurther improve professionalism by ensuring stability of the
\ncapital city," he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso ordered all soldiers to continue improving their
\nvigilance and to prepare for their next duty: safeguarding the
\nHouse of Representatives' General Assembly next March.<\/p>\n
He also urged the public to help maintain security in
\nneighborhoods. "Don't hesitate to report to the nearest Vigilance
\nCommand Post at a local military district command whenever there
