Three shot in gambling raid<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: Three people were injured when
\npolice opened fire while raiding an illicit gambling den at
\nPolipolia market here over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Among those injured was a nine-year-old boy named Obed, who
\nwas shot in the back. The other two were identified as Siri, 60,
\nwho was shot in the arm, and Anju, 17, who was shot in the arm
\nand chin.<\/p>\n
All three victims had nothing to do with the gambling
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
Kolaka Police Precinct chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Joko Mulyono
\nconfirmed the incident on Monday, saying, however, that he had
\nyet to receive reports giving details of the shooting.<\/p>\n
\"I'm going to visit the accident site to find out what has
\nreally happened,\" he was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Siri said that people were shocked upon hearing gunshots fired
\nby the policemen raiding the gambling den, which was open every
\nday at the market place.<\/p>\n
\"People ran for their lives and the gambling operators
\nallegedly slipped among the people to escape,\" Siri said. \"I had
\njust returned from a traditional dentist at the market and
\nstopped to see a group of people gambling. I told them to stop
\nbefore policemen raided them.\" A stray bullet hit him.<\/p>\n
\"Obed the nine-year-old boy was sitting, waiting for an ojek
\n(motorcycle taxi) to go home when a stray bullet hit him,\" Siri
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Local residents protesting the random shooting destroyed
\nLidongi police station, demanding that police be held
\nresponsible.<\/p>",
